I hate flags. The pride we have in them divide us. They cause separation that would not otherwise exist. Lastly, since the dawn of written language, flags have been associated with war and death. We are all created equal; when flags come out, someone always feels that they are better than others.
Or worse….they think that they are better than they really are.
Yet, for the first time in my life, I am getting a non-neutral feeling when I see and wear the colors of the American flag. As a Boy Scout, the American flag was a part of everything …but it was that way with everyone else in a BSA uniform.
Now that I am on TeamUSA and the US swag is starting to come in the mail, I am starting to like it. I have the colors on my workout bag and my shirt. To prevent becoming one of those who I dislike, I have created this plan.
At the World Championship, there will be photo moments, when I will stand with competitors from other countries. As an act of support for all the countries of the world, I am going to make it a point to get photos of their flags every chance I can get. I may find pride in our flag, but I will respect all the others ones I meet. Sure, I am a citizen of the US, but ahead of that, I am a citizen of the World.
